Wedding Cake With Raffia And A Bird's Nest

This cake had raffia tied around tiers that were covered with a rough-iced buttercream. The topper was a gumpaste bird's nest with two blue birds in it.

Tied together in back.

As an aside, to attach raffia around cake tiers, just overlap the ends of the strand, then tie them together with another piece of raffia. For a different look, you could also tie the raffia into a bow. Also, don't cheap out and get the ratty raffia that comes in a wadded up bag. Buy the nicer stuff that comes in a longer bag, since it looks prettier and doesn't need to be stretched out and relaxed before it's put on the cake.
