How To Do A Knitted Texture On A Cake Ahead Of Time

I've seen cakes that have a knitted texture made from fondant...There are texture mats that can make a passable texture, but to really do it so that it looks best you should do it using rolls of fondant.

The only problem with that is that it takes forever to do enough rolls to cover a full cake. Here's one way to do some of it ahead of time so that you can speed up the decorating process when the time comes to cover the cake.
