You can use corn syrup or piping gel to attach them, or regular buttercream if you have a buttercream-covered cake. The simplest would be the corn syrup or icing, but if you want to use piping gel you can buy it or make your own using this recipe:
Combine water and corn starch in a heat-proof container like a Pyrex measuring cup. Whisk until no lumps remain. Whisk in the corn syrup until combined.
Microwave for 2-3 minutes on high, (or heat over medium heat on the stove) stopping every minute to stir. The mixture will bubble up and boil before thickening to the consistency of hair gel. Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature. Add a small amount of water if it gets too thick. Store refrigerated in an airtight container for up to three months.
